Oyo Government Attributes Tragic WASSCE Student Death to Traffic Violation by Victim’s Father
The Oyo State government has linked the tragic death of a WASSCE candidate in Ibadan to a traffic violation by the student’s father, who was reportedly driving against traffic at the time of the incident.
The student, who was en route to his examination center with his twin brother, was struck by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer attempting to stop their vehicle. The incident occurred along the Gbagi Market axis and led to widespread public outcry.
Despite being rushed to Welfare Hospital, the student was pronounced dead on arrival.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday by Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the Special Adviser on Media to Governor Seyi Makinde, the government described the loss as deeply painful and unnecessary, but emphasized that the tragic outcome stemmed from an illegal act by the driver.
According to the statement, the incident unfolded during a joint operation between the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) and police officers, prompted by public complaints about repeated one-way violations and accidents in the area.
“The father of the deceased was driving a tinted black Honda Accord, registration number FST 639 JU, against the flow of traffic when the incident occurred,” the statement explained.
Authorities claim that during efforts to stop the vehicle, a police officer fired a shot aimed at the car’s tire. The bullet reportedly missed and fatally struck the student instead.
The police officer involved is currently under investigation by the Oyo State Police Command.
While expressing sympathy to the bereaved family, the government promised a thorough investigation and appropriate actions to ensure justice. The statement also warned residents against disobeying traffic regulations and urged calm as the case is being handled.
“We must emphasize the importance of obeying traffic laws to prevent further loss of life. Our thoughts are with the family of the victim,” the government said.
