Real Reason Some Gospel Artists Switch to Secular Music – Ric Hassani Speaks Out
Nigerian singer Ric Hassani has shed light on why some gospel musicians make the switch to secular music, saying it’s more about personal purpose than chasing money.
Speaking in a recent interview with Hip TV, the “Thunder Fire You” hitmaker revealed that he actually started his music journey in church, but later realized that gospel music wasn’t his true calling.
“Gospel music isn’t just about having a good voice,” Ric explained. “You need to be spiritually gifted to interpret God’s message through music. Take CeCe Winans for example — the way she sings, it’s clear she’s blessed to deliver the Holy Spirit through music. Not everyone has that.”
He added, “Look, I’m a Christian. I even include gospel songs in all my albums. But that’s not my lane. I believe I was made to impact the world differently. If I go into church music now, I might not make it. It’s just not my thing.”
Addressing the common belief that artists leave gospel music for fame and fortune, Ric set the record straight.
“It’s not always about the money,” he said. “Yes, creatives like money — who doesn’t? But real fulfilment comes from being able to create and express yourself. Look at Wizkid, Burna Boy, or Davido — they’ve got more money than most, but they’re still making music. Why? Because it’s about passion and purpose.”
According to Ric, being true to your gift is what really matters, not just the genre or paycheck. His comments have since sparked conversations among fans and fellow musicians, especially those trying to find their place between spirituality and creativity.
