The kidnappers broke down our door, They’ve guns, and They whipped my back with machetes–Amedu
In what he describes as the longest night of his life, Wisdom Amedu, a 32-year-old farmer and part-time writer, has shared the terrifying moment armed kidnappers stormed his home in Edo State, attacking him with machetes and dragging him into captivity.
According to a NewsVista report, the incident took place just after midnight in his quiet rural town, where the sound of gunshots and barking dogs shattered the silence. “We were fast asleep when the dogs started barking,” Amedu said. “Then gunfire. One of the dogs was shot, and within five minutes, they broke down the door.”
Masked and heavily armed, the assailants forced their way into the home, shouting threats and making it impossible for Amedu to call for help. Alone and outnumbered, he opened his bedroom door—only to be met with brutal violence.
“I lay face down on the floor, trying to show I wasn’t resisting,” he recalled. “They didn’t care. They started using machetes to lash my back while tearing through my belongings.”
The attackers ransacked the house, making away with electronics, money, and other valuables. But the worst was far from over. After robbing him, they tied Amedu up and began demanding a ransom, threatening more violence if their financial demands weren’t met.
Bound and bleeding, Amedu was held hostage for hours in his own living room, helpless and unable to cry out. His family, alerted to the situation, scrambled to meet the captors’ demands. Eventually, a payment was made, and Amedu was released.
Now recovering from his physical and emotional wounds, Amedu has reported the incident to authorities. The case is under investigation by local law enforcement, but the terrifying nature of the attack has left a deep scar—not just on the victim, but on the entire community.
Community leaders are now calling for more police patrols and quicker emergency response in rural areas where these kinds of attacks are becoming disturbingly frequent.
This chilling ordeal serves as yet another grim reminder of the rising insecurity in Nigeria’s interior communities—where even a quiet night can suddenly descend into chaos.
