Like Trump, Jonathan Should Fight Back to Power — Nigeria Needs Him, Says Dennis Sami

According to a NewsVista report, political commentator Dennis Sami has stirred the waters of national politics by calling on former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election — and to do so with boldness, not silence.

Drawing comparisons with former U.S. President Donald Trump, Sami said Nigeria cannot keep recycling political godfathers while capable leaders like Jonathan remain on the sidelines. “Power in Nigeria is not given. It is taken. Jonathan must fight for it, like Trump is doing,” he declared.

Sami reflected on Jonathan’s peaceful rise to power — from Deputy Governor to President — a journey many believed was divinely arranged. But he argued that Jonathan’s quiet approach left him politically vulnerable. This time, Sami believes, the former president must return with grit, not just grace.

“The political space has changed. It now requires a fight. If good men keep calling politics a dirty game, then dirty people will keep ruling us,” he warned, quoting playwright Ola Rotimi.

He likened Jonathan’s 2015 loss to Trump’s 2020 defeat — both surrounded by controversy and political manipulation. Yet, while Trump is staging a comeback, Jonathan remains silent. Sami says that needs to change.

Despite Jonathan’s silence, he remains respected at home and abroad, and Sami believes his leadership is needed now more than ever — especially as Nigeria battles economic hardship, inflation, and insecurity.

“Jonathan left power with honour. But now, he must return with courage. Nigerians still remember the peace during his time. We don’t need another godfather. We need a leader,” he said.

While Jonathan has made no official move, pressure from political observers and citizens may soon force his hand.
