According to a NewsVista reporter, former presidential aide Reno Omokri is stirring conversation with a money advice that’s both bold and practical.

In a recent post on X, Omokri urged Nigerians to ditch cash payments entirely — at least for a few months — and pay for everything using their ATM cards instead. His reason? It’s one of the fastest ways to expose and curb bad spending habits.

“I’m telling you,” he wrote, “nothing focuses your mind on how to use money better than seeing all the unnecessary spending staring right back at you on a bank statement.”

Omokri’s advice comes as Nigeria continues to rely heavily on cash, with the Central Bank reporting over 90% of transactions in 2023 were cash-based.

Interestingly, research backs him up. A 2019 study in the Journal of Consumer Research found that people become 15–20% more aware of their spending when using traceable electronic payments.

The message is clear: If you want to master your money, let your bank statement be your mirror.
