Dangote Refinery Halts Discounted Petrol Scheme After Uncovering Widespread Fraud

According to a NewsVista reporter, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has suspended its discounted fuel delivery program following the discovery of massive fraud involving affiliate marketers and key partners.

The program, designed to keep petrol affordable and ensure nationwide supply, was reportedly hijacked by marketers who diverted discounted products to unregistered third parties — selling them at inflated market rates.

A letter dated July 13, 2025, and signed by Fatima Dangote, Group Executive Director of Commercial Operations, revealed that some partners were even selling fuel directly from the tarmac below official gantry prices — a move that the refinery says threatened its long-term sustainability.

“Despite several warnings, it’s clear the system was being abused,” the company said. “We’ve had to suspend the discount offer to stop further market distortion.”

The refinery confirmed that any product payments completed before July 13 will still be honored at the partner price, but going forward, stricter controls will be enforced.

While the discount program is now on hold, Dangote Refinery says it remains committed to its strategic partnerships and is already working on a new, fairer incentive scheme to reward compliance.

Meanwhile, the competition is heating up. Several private depots — including Matrix Warri and Rainoil — have reportedly slashed their petrol prices in response to Dangote’s recent pricing adjustments, now hovering around ₦820 per litre.
