“I Will Not Let This Slide” – Dayo Amusa Threatens Legal Action Over False HIV Claim
Nollywood actress and singer Dayo Amusa has vowed to take legal action against a content creator who falsely claimed she is HIV positive—a statement she describes as both damaging and completely untrue.
In a video posted on Saturday, the 41-year-old expressed deep outrage over the misinformation, clarifying that she had previously shared her HIV-negative status online to encourage fans to prioritize their health.
“A few years ago, I did an HIV test, which came out negative, and I posted it to encourage my fans to get theirs done,” she said. “Some days ago, a content creator posted it on his page that I am HIV positive.”
“He Will Be My Scapegoat” – Dayo Vows Legal Action
Visibly emotional, Amusa stated that she will pursue legal measures against the content creator, whom she believes should be held accountable to set an example for others spreading fake news.
“By now, he knows what he is going through because I will not let this slide,” she said.
“Why do content creators and bloggers post unverified information? I have families and friends who read all these lies. He will be my scapegoat and serve as a lesson to others. I am HIV negative.”
Amusa also highlighted the psychological toll the false report has taken on her and her loved ones.
Content Creator Responds: “It Was an Honest Mistake”
The content creator, identified simply as Segun, has since responded to the backlash, claiming the misinformation was unintentional. In a follow-up post, he blamed a newly hired assistant for the error.
“It was the new assistant I hired recently that gave me the list of the celebrities that have HIV,” he said.
“I never said Dayo Amusa had HIV, I said she publicly discussed her HIV status. I didn’t even know who Dayo Amusa was—it was an honest mistake that I had apologized for, and I took down the video. If you have not made an error before, judge me.”
Despite the apology, Dayo Amusa appears determined to pursue legal action to ensure accountability and deter future defamation from online creators.
A Widening Trend in Nollywood
Amusa’s case adds to a growing trend of Nigerian celebrities pushing back against defamatory and unverified content circulated on social media. The rise of clickbait headlines and false claims from influencers and bloggers has become a serious concern for public figures who often bear the brunt of online misinformation.
As the legal battle unfolds, many fans and fellow celebrities are standing behind Dayo Amusa, commending her for taking a firm stance against digital defamation.
