“This Is Not How I Was Born—Measles Took My Sight” — Ibitoye Ajayi of Pain & Pleasure Band

From pain came music, and from music came hope.
That is the story of Ibitoye Ajayi, a talented member of the famous Pain and Pleasure Band—a group of physically challenged singers in Lagos State.

Speaking on Kunleafod TV (August 16, 2025), Ajayi opened up about how a childhood illness completely changed the course of his life.

How He Lost His Sight

With a voice filled with both strength and calmness, Ajayi recalled:

“This is not how I was born. Measles was the cause of my blindness. That was back in 1983. After that, I was introduced to the school of the blind in Owo, and I completed my studies there in 2002. I was enjoying it because it gave me hope.”

Despite losing his sight, Ajayi refused to lose his dream.

Finding Music in the Midst of Pain

By 2013, destiny opened a new door. A friend told Ajayi about a Lagos-based music group for the blind. With his early background in church singing, he quickly joined the Pain and Pleasure Band, where he continues to shine as one of its pillars.

Why His Story Matters

  • It reminds us that disability is not inability.

  • It shows how resilience and faith can turn pain into purpose.

  • It inspires millions who face health challenges or sudden life changes.
