The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is in shock after 19-year-old student Jamie-Lee de Bruins was allegedly murdered by her 21-year-old boyfriend. Authorities say the suspect appeared in court yesterday, facing charges linked to her death.
Reports indicate the tragedy occurred at the boyfriend’s residence, where Jamie-Lee was allegedly assaulted during the night. Neighbours heard distressing noises but only realised the severity when emergency services arrived the next morning, by which time she had already died.
The incident has devastated the student community, with many remembering Jamie-Lee as a bright, dedicated young woman. Counseling services are being offered to help students process the loss. Police confirmed the accused remains in custody as further investigation continues.
Gender-based violence activists have condemned the killing, urging stronger protections for women and stricter penalties for offenders. A vigil is planned at CPUT this week to honour Jamie-Lee and raise awareness against violence targeting women.
