TRAGIC : University of Limpopo Student Dies in Suspected Suicide at Sovenga Hill

Polokwane – The University of Limpopo community is in shock following the death of a student who allegedly took their own life at Sovenga Hill, a well-known landmark on the university campus in Mankweng. The incident occurred earlier today, leaving students and staff deeply saddened.

According to initial reports, the student’s body was discovered by passersby hiking near the hill. Security personnel and local police were immediately alerted, and paramedics later confirmed the individual was deceased at the scene. While early indications suggest suicide, authorities are awaiting a full investigation and post-mortem results before confirming the official cause of death.

The student’s identity has been withheld pending notification of next of kin. Fellow learners have taken to social media to express grief, describing the deceased as humble and quiet. The University of Limpopo released a statement offering condolences and confirming that counseling and psychological support services are being provided to affected students and staff.

Mental health experts have emphasized the importance of seeking help when facing emotional or academic stress, encouraging open dialogue around depression and suicide prevention. University and community leaders are also calling for stronger mental health awareness campaigns, particularly as academic pressures and social isolation increasingly affect student wellbeing.

A candlelight vigil is planned to honor the student’s life and promote mental health awareness. Further updates, reflections, and support resources are available on SouthReport.
