Mkhwanazi Bombshell: Weapons Cache Found In MaMkhize’s Home Linked To ‘Cat’ Matlala
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has revealed a major development in South Africa’s ongoing security and corruption saga, confirming that a weapons cache found at businesswoman Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize’s La Lucia residence is linked to controversial security boss Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala.
During a high-level briefing, Mkhwanazi stated that over 40 firearms—including rifles and handguns—were recovered during a November 2024 raid. Investigations traced the arsenal back to CAT VIP Protection, Matlala’s security company.
“This is not speculation. These weapons are legally registered to CAT VIP Protection, not MaMkhize,” Mkhwanazi said, emphasizing the need to probe how such a cache ended up in a private residence not licensed for firearms storage.
Matlala, currently in Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre, faces attempted murder charges and is implicated in the R850 million Thembisa Hospital corruption scandal. He is scheduled to appear at Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on July 11.
Mkhwanazi also hinted at political interference, implicating Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. Alleged cellphone records reportedly show communication between Mchunu and individuals linked to Matlala’s company, raising concerns over shielding of illegal operations.
In response, Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police, chaired by Ian Cameron, has called for an urgent inquiry. Cameron stated, “The fact that a person under investigation for corruption and violent crimes is allowed to retain security industry accreditation is deeply troubling.” Formal requests for a full-scale investigation have been submitted to the Speaker of Parliament.
