Sho Madjozi on becoming ‘Choice Mom’
Madjozi announced in August this year that she had welcomed her first baby.
Musician and entrepreneur Sho Madjozi recently opened up about becoming a mother by choice.
The Huku hitmaker was a guest on Nandi Madida’s new podcast, The Motherhood Network, which honours every mother’s journey, those who are parenting by choice, by circumstance, or by calling.
In the episode, Sho Madjozi opened up about her personal journey as a choice mom, a woman who chooses motherhood independently, out of love and purpose rather than circumstance or partnership.
The award-winning singer, whose real name is Maya Christinah Xichavo Wegerif, announced in August this year that she had welcomed her first baby.
She had kept her pregnancy under wraps and made the big announcement with a series of maternity shoot images, along with a photo cradling her newborn.
“Y’all go ahead and enjoy Friday without me. My dream of becoming a mum has finally come true,” she wrote, captioning the pictures.

Sho Madjozi on being a choice mom
Speaking to Madida, Madjozi said being a choice mom means having a child regardless of your relationship status.
“A choice mom means I chose to be a mum. It wasn’t because I was married or because of a relationship — it was because I truly wanted to become a mother,” she said.
“As women, we must be allowed to embrace motherhood on our own terms, free from shame or societal expectation.”
Madjozi added that she would rather parent alone than with the wrong person.
“It’s not easy to find a partner. I don’t know why. I would much rather parent alone than parent with the wrong person.
“I feel free dating without that pressure. I have the privilege of not needing a relationship. I have the privilege of not needing a man.”
She also highlighted that she and her baby’s father have a great understanding.
“I did it that way. I got a father of my child who is kind and gives me space. We have a great understanding. He’s fantastic. We’re having the best time. We don’t have to be in each other’s space — I don’t owe him.”
