Police reject GH¢5000 bribe from taxi driver arrested with narcotics

The police, acting on a tip-off, have apprehended a taxi driver who was allegedly transporting narcotics.

He was stopped while driving the taxicab, which was en route from Dzolokpuita in the Ho West District to Ho.

According to the police, during a search, they discovered 37 parcels containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana hidden beneath the back seat.

The driver, identified by the police as Innocent Kpeglo, a 36-year-old individual, was subsequently taken into custody.

The vehicle, an Opel taxicab with the registration number CR 675-12, has also been seized.

Deputy Superintendent of Police in charge of the Ho West District, Rockson Gyasi, confirmed Kpeglo’s arrest to Graphic Online shortly after the incident.

He stated that following the tip-off, a team was promptly assembled to conduct an operation to locate the vehicle carrying the illegal substances.

DSP Gyasi mentioned that at approximately 05:57 hours, the vehicle was spotted on the road, and upon noticing the police officers, the driver stopped and opened the bonnet as if the vehicle had malfunctioned.

When the officers approached him, Kpeglo immediately informed them that he was transporting the narcotics to an individual in Aflao.

He then attempted to bribe the police with GH¢5000 to resolve the situation, according to DSP Gyasi.

However, the police declined the bribe and took him to the Anyirawase Police Station for a comprehensive search of the vehicle, which resulted in the discovery of the contraband, DSP Gyasi inf

He added that the suspect, who was later taken to the Volta Regional Police Headquarters in Ho, was being processed for court on charges of possession of narcotic substances.
