Rising Afrobeats artiste and comedian Nasboi has criticised Nigerian politicians who attempt to gain the support of young voters by distributing food items and small gifts during elections.
The entertainer expressed frustration over the long-standing practice of offering bags of rice and other handouts to citizens in exchange for political loyalty, warning that such tactics no longer address the real concerns of many Nigerians.
Nasboi shared his thoughts in a message posted on social media, where he accused political leaders of repeatedly underestimating the awareness and intelligence of the country’s youth.
According to him, many young Nigerians are increasingly unwilling to trade their future for temporary benefits, especially as the country continues to face serious economic challenges.
In recent years, rising living costs, limited job opportunities and economic hardship have intensified the frustrations of many young people across the country.
Reacting to the situation, Nasboi argued that the common political strategy of distributing food items during election periods cannot compensate for years of hardship experienced by ordinary citizens.
“Your rice and small handouts won’t carry us through years of hardship,” he wrote in the message addressed to political leaders.
The singer, who first gained popularity through comedy skits before transitioning into music, is known for occasionally using humour and satire to highlight social and political issues affecting Nigerians.
However, his latest comments carried a more serious tone as he urged political figures to focus on meaningful governance rather than symbolic gestures aimed at winning short-term public approval.
He emphasised that young Nigerians are becoming more politically aware and are increasingly demanding better leadership, accountability and long-term solutions to the country’s problems.
“You know what is right. Do the real work, take real action, and stop trying to outsmart us with crumbs. Nigeria deserves better,” the singer added.
Nasboi’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment among many young citizens who believe that genuine development and responsible governance should replace vote-buying practices during election cycles.
Political analysts and civic groups have repeatedly raised concerns about the influence of vote-buying in Nigeria’s electoral process. The distribution of food items, cash and other gifts during campaigns has often been criticised for undermining democratic values and encouraging short-term political loyalty rather than policy-based support.
In recent years, however, social media platforms have become a space where young Nigerians openly discuss governance, accountability and political participation.
Public figures, including musicians, actors and content creators, have increasingly joined these conversations by using their influence to speak on national issues.
Nasboi’s message adds to a wider public debate about the role of citizens—particularly young voters—in shaping Nigeria’s political future.
By urging politicians to prioritise meaningful action over symbolic gestures, the entertainer suggested that the expectations of voters are gradually changing.
His comments also highlight how entertainers and influencers are becoming more vocal about social concerns, using their platforms to encourage civic awareness among their audiences.
For many observers, the growing willingness of young Nigerians to question political practices signals a shift toward greater engagement in democratic processes.
Nasboi’s message, though brief, echoes a broader call for leaders to focus on policies and initiatives that can improve living standards rather than relying on temporary incentives during elections.
