Lagos Police Apprehend Officer for Assaulting E-Hailing Driver
The Lagos State Police Command has taken Inspector Obic Modestus into custody after he was caught on video assaulting an e-hailing driver. The footage, which quickly went viral on Monday morning, sparked widespread outrage across various social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter).
Many Nigerians expressed disappointment over the incident, criticizing the persistent lack of professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force—especially in the wake of the #EndSARS protests against police brutality in October 2020.
Among those who condemned the officer’s actions was activist, actor, and comedian Debo Adedayo, popularly known as Mr. Macaroni. In response to the viral clip, he wrote:
“Nobody should be treated like this!!! Just look at this barbarism!!! Will you people ever change??? Nigerian Police!!! Please have some shame!”
According to Naija News, Lagos Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the officer’s arrest later that day. Hundeyin emphasized that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, is committed to upholding professional conduct within the force.
Inspector Modestus has since been referred to the Complaint Response Unit and will be transferred to the Provost Department for disciplinary proceedings.
“The Lagos Police Command, under CP Olohundare Jimoh, maintains zero tolerance for any form of misconduct or disrespect towards the public,” Hundeyin added.
