Davido Shuts Down Tribal Criticism, Affirms Igbo Heritage and Passion for Journalism

Afrobeats sensation Davido has addressed a tribal controversy stirred by a social media post criticizing his close ties with Nigeria’s Igbo community, affirming that he is proudly Igbo by heritage.

The singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, responded directly to a user on platform 𝕏 who warned him against associating too closely with Igbos, claiming it could lead to betrayal. The post accused Davido, a Yoruba man, of becoming too aligned with the Igbo community.

In a bold and straightforward reply, Davido dismissed the divisive remark, writing:
“Lol, I AM IGBO by blood.”

His response has drawn widespread praise online, with many applauding him for rejecting tribalism and promoting unity in a country often strained by ethnic tensions.

In a related development, Davido shared in a recent interview that he might have pursued a career in journalism if music hadn’t worked out. Speaking with Atlanta’s 96.1 The Beat, the singer revealed his passion for media and communication, saying he enjoys public engagement and promotional work—unlike many of his peers who avoid the spotlight outside music.

“I love conversations. I studied marketing alongside business management. I just enjoy talking, sharing, promoting. If I had a podcast, I could go for days,” Davido said, laughing.

He explained that he takes a hands-on approach to his career, investing time in media appearances and fan interaction, which he believes sets him apart.

“Many big artists don’t do press, but I do because I enjoy it. I’m curious, I like knowing things, I do a lot of research even when I’m home,” he added.

Davido also spoke about maintaining a strong work ethic despite his success, drawing inspiration from global icons like Beyoncé.

“Some people think followers or success just come, but I work hard. Even Beyoncé, with all her money, still works like crazy,” he noted.

The singer’s comments reinforced his image not only as a leading figure in Afrobeats but also as a grounded and intellectually driven entertainer committed to his craft and national unity.
