Kogi Clears ₦98.8 Billion Debt in 15 Months – Finance Commissioner

Ahmed Usman Ododo

The Kogi State Government has announced the clearance of ₦98.8 billion in inherited debts within just 15 months of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration.

This was revealed on Monday by the State Commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning, Ashiru Idris, during a post-council briefing held at the Government House, Lokoja.

Debts from Past Governors Settled

According to Idris, the cleared debt includes liabilities dating back to the administration of Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, as well as the ₦50 billion salary bailout loan collected during Captain Idris Wada’s tenure.

“This administration has successfully paid off a total of ₦98.8 billion inherited from previous governments,” he said.

IGR Boost Fueled Debt Repayment

The commissioner credited the repayment success to a sharp increase in internally generated revenue (IGR), driven by reforms under the current administration.

“Governor Ododo empowered the Kogi State Internal Revenue Agency to improve collections. That made this feat possible,” he added.

Infrastructure & Climate Action Also Prioritized

Speaking further, Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, highlighted key projects including:

  • Perimeter fencing of Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, following last year’s security breach.

  • The establishment of a Climate Change Agency to tackle environmental challenges across the state.

Ododo’s Administration Earns Praise

The announcement has drawn commendation from residents who view the rapid debt settlement as a sign of prudent financial management and increased accountability.
