BREAKING: Tragedy in Cross River: Woman Allegedly Attacks Mother-in-Law Over “Overstaying Welcome”

Graphic photos taken at the scene show the elderly woman with deep bruises, swollen cuts, and bloodied wounds covering her shoulders, arms, and back. Her injuries appear consistent with a severe beating, suggesting she may have been attacked with a hard object or sharp instrument.
The victim, who has yet to be officially identified by authorities, was rushed to a nearby health centre by neighbours who responded to her cries for help. Medical personnel on duty confirmed that she is receiving treatment for multiple lacerations and suspected fractures.
One neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons, described the incident as “unbelievable” and “a sad day for our community.” The neighbour recounted: “I heard shouting and screaming from the house. When we rushed in, the mother-in-law was on the floor, covered in blood. It was horrifying.”

Efforts to reach the husband in Lagos for comment have so far been unsuccessful. Locals say he was last seen leaving the community to handle a business trip, apparently unaware of the growing tension between his wife and mother.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the matter. A police spokesperson confirmed that they have received a formal complaint and are currently interviewing witnesses. “We will not tolerate domestic violence in any form,” the spokesperson stated. “Whoever is responsible for this attack will be brought to justice.”
Community leaders have condemned the incident, calling for calm while the investigation continues. “This is a deeply troubling case,” said one elder. “No one should have to endure such violence, especially from family.”
As the investigation progresses, many are calling for support for the victim, whose condition remains critical. Activists are also urging the government to do more to protect elderly women from abuse, especially in domestic settings where they are vulnerable.
The story highlights a troubling trend of domestic violence in Nigeria, where cultural and social factors often leave elderly women at risk of abuse and neglect. Legal experts say the case could set an important precedent for how domestic violence cases involving in-laws are handled in the state.
The victim’s name and the name of the alleged attacker are being withheld pending further investigation.
