Gunmen Kill Two Truck Drivers in Imo, Set Vehicle on Fire

Gunmen attacked a truck at Ogi Junction in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State over the weekend, killing two drivers and setting both the vehicle and their bodies ablaze.
The truck, loaded with gari and en route to Port Harcourt, was ambushed in broad daylight. Dahiru Musa, Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Okigwe, confirmed the incident. He said he immediately informed the Nigerian Army and the police.
Security officials, including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Okigwe and soldiers, visited the scene. The victims’ remains were taken to a hospital and buried on Monday after funeral prayers.
Mahmud Jafaru, spokesperson for the NURTW Heavy Truck Division in Jos, identified the victims as Haruna Muhammad and Adamu Ibrahim. According to him, the truck had departed from Ayangade before it was attacked.
“This is one too many,” Jafaru said. “Northern drivers are being slaughtered like they’re worth nothing. We’ve lost countless men and trucks, and the authorities appear helpless.”
He called on federal and state governments, along with security agencies, to urgently protect truck drivers who are increasingly targeted by violent criminals.
As of the time of filing this report, the Imo State Police Command had not released an official statement.
