Aliko Dangote Retires as Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery After 20 Years; Arnold Ekpe Named Successor

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and one of Nigeria’s most influential business leaders, has officially stepped down as Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, marking the end of a remarkable two-decade leadership journey.

The company confirmed in an official statement released on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, that Dangote’s retirement will take effect from June 16, 2025.

A Legacy of Industrial Growth and Transformation

Dangote became Chairman of Dangote Sugar in 2005 and was instrumental in transforming it into Nigeria’s leading sugar refining company. Under his leadership, the company implemented:

  • Large-scale expansion projects

  • Strong corporate governance reforms

  • Strategic backward integration initiatives in Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa States

These efforts significantly boosted local sugar production and aimed to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on sugar imports.

The company’s statement reads:

“In line with the principles of good corporate governance and succession planning, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc hereby announces the retirement of our esteemed Chairman of the Board of Directors, Alhaji Aliko Dangote (GCON), effective June 16, 2025.”

Arnold Ekpe Named New Chairman

In a seamless transition, the board of Dangote Sugar has appointed Arnold Ekpe, an Independent Non-Executive Director, as the incoming Chairman of the Board, effective the same day.

Ekpe is a seasoned banker and the former Group CEO of Ecobank, with decades of experience in financial services, leadership, and corporate strategy across Africa.

The board’s announcement added:

“Following a rigorous selection and transition process, the Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Arnold Ekpe as the new Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, effective June 16, 2025.”

Board Acknowledges Dangote’s Contributions

The Board of Directors expressed deep appreciation for Dangote’s unwavering leadership and commitment over the years:
