Gunmen Kill 27 in Fresh Attacks on Mangu Communities, Seize 30 Hectares of Farmland in Plateau State
At least 27 people have been killed in coordinated attacks across Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, as gunmen stormed five communities—Langai, Gyambwos, Kubwon, Chinchim, and Feer—between Sunday, June 8, and Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
The lawmaker representing Mangu South, Hon. Mathew Kwarpo, confirmed the deaths and revealed that over 30 hectares of farmland have been forcefully taken by the assailants.
“These killings and land seizures didn’t just start this week—we’ve been under siege since 2023,” Kwarpo lamented. He said armed attackers, suspected to be herdsmen, have displaced farmers and taken over vast agricultural lands.
The attacks began Sunday in Langai, where eight people, mostly women and children, were killed. On Monday, seven were murdered in Gyambwos during a midnight raid. Feer Hamlet lost another seven residents at dawn on Tuesday, and four more were killed that evening in Chinchim village.
The lawmaker warned that continued land seizure could worsen food insecurity in the region, as Mangu is a major agricultural hub in the state.
These attacks follow a similar six-day siege in neighbouring Bokkos LGA last week. Homes were burned, properties destroyed, and lives lost—raising concerns over deteriorating security in Plateau.
While the Plateau State government condemned the killings and Governor Caleb Mutfwang described them as “unacceptable,” the police command has yet to provide a formal update.
The crisis, often tied to long-standing land disputes between local farmers and herders, continues to escalate. Community leaders, residents, and lawmakers are now calling for urgent federal intervention to end the bloodshed and reclaim occupied farmlands.
