Tragedy on Kaduna-Zaria Highway: Pregnant Woman with Twins, 7 Others from Same Family Killed in Eid Crash

A heartbreaking road accident has left Kaduna State in deep mourning as eight members of the same family, including a woman eight months pregnant with twins, were killed in a horrific crash on Monday, June 9, 2025, during the Eid-el-Kabir festivities.
The tragic incident occurred in the Barakallahu area along the busy Kaduna-Zaria highway at around 6 p.m., when a speeding Mercedes GLK Jeep lost control and ploughed into pedestrians waiting by the roadside.
Entire Family Wiped Out
The victims had just left their grandmother’s house and were waiting for transportation home. Among the dead were two children, three sisters, an aunt, and a pregnant woman expecting twins, identified as Zainab Muhammad.
Her grieving husband, Sulaiman Abdulkadir Mai Shinkafa, a cleric from Hayin Rigasa, described the horrifying moment:
“Her body was crushed. My 6-year-old son Khalid’s bones were shattered. We had to gather their remains with planks for burial. No family should ever witness this.”
Another devastated relative, Malam Jamilu Usman Mai Yadi, lost his wife Khadija Umar, her two sisters, and his sons Sadiq (16) and Muhammad (9).
“We lost eight members of our family that evening. It’s unbearable,” he said.
Driver on the Run, Government Silent
The driver, said to be a young boy from Rigachikun, reportedly fled the scene. Witnesses claim he is the son of a prominent politician, raising fears that justice may be hindered.
“Till now, no condolences, no visit, not even from the government. We feel abandoned,” Sulaiman added.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the accident and blamed speeding and slippery roads due to rain. Sector Commander Tijjani Iliyasu said six people died instantly, while others succumbed to their injuries later in the hospital.
Although the vehicle has been recovered, Kaduna State Police have yet to issue an official statement. Attempts to reach DSP Mansir Hassan have gone unanswered.
Community in Tears, Calling for Justice
The entire Barakallahu community has been plunged into grief. Imam Rabiu, a local religious leader, said:
“The town was silent that night. We buried eight members of one family at once. May Allah forgive them.”
Another resident, Adam, described the crash as “dreadful and painful,” adding that many residents are losing faith in road safety enforcement and justice.
Will Justice Be Served?
As questions mount over the lack of accountability, the grieving families and the wider public are demanding action and compassion from the government.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter enforcement of road safety laws, especially during festive periods when roads are busiest.
