How online trolling helped fuel my global success – Rema

Afrobeats star Rema has revealed that he feels grateful—not bitter—about being trolled on social media, crediting the online criticism as part of his journey to international success.

In a recent video interview shared online, the Nigerian singer reflected on how negative comments and skepticism over his unique sound only served to motivate him further.

“It is beautiful to see something that people troll and criticise me for. And, you know what? I’m benefiting from that,” Rema said, acknowledging the personal and professional growth he’s experienced despite the backlash.

The ‘Calm Down’ hitmaker admitted that had he paid attention to trolls and shifted his sound, he might not have achieved the level of global acclaim he enjoys today.

“Imagine if I had stopped or listened to trolls. Like if I should say, ‘Oh, I think I should switch it off.’ And four years later, it paid and it paid. And more to come,” he said.

Rema also celebrated a major career milestone, highlighting that he was the first Afrobeats artist—and possibly the first African artist—to tour India, a feat he considers a “huge deal.”

His remarks come as a powerful reminder of perseverance and self-belief, showing how staying true to his artistry in the face of criticism has helped him shape one of the most exciting global careers in Afrobeats today.
