“Please Help Me – My Mother-In-Law Has Taken Over My Marriage” – Newlywed Cries Out
Just two months into her marriage, a young Nigerian woman is already feeling overwhelmed and emotionally drained—not by her husband, but by her mother-in-law.
In a touching anonymous message, she explained how her husband’s mother, who moved in shortly after the wedding, has become a dominating presence in their home—controlling the kitchen, interrupting private moments, and sidelining her in her own marriage.
“I feel like I have to take permission before I cook for my husband,” she said.
“She comes into the kitchen to monitor me, tell me how to cook, and which spices to use. I barely feel like the woman of the house.”
The young woman shared how her mother-in-law constantly interferes, even during simple, loving moments between her and her husband.
“One time we were just cuddling on the couch while watching a movie. She came in and told us to go into the bedroom if we wanted to be ‘doing love things.’ It was embarrassing.”
Another painful issue is how her mother-in-law always claims the front seat beside her husband whenever they go out—leaving her, the wife, to sit in the back.
“It may seem like a small thing to some people, but it really hurts,” she confessed. “I feel like I’m a stranger in my own home.”
She added that although her husband is an only child raised solely by his mother, she wasn’t prepared for this kind of intrusion. She’s tempted to invite her own mother to live with them just to even the playing field, but she fears it would make things worse.
Now, she’s stuck—unsure how to approach her husband or ask her mother-in-law to leave without creating a major family conflict.
“I’m tired. I don’t want to be disrespectful, but I need space to build my home. I don’t know what to do,” she pleaded.
What Should She Do?
Should she confront her husband? Speak to her mother-in-law directly? Or stay silent and endure?
