Tragedy in Lagos: Truck Crushes Bus, Kills Driver and Injures 3 in “Devastating Crash”
A regular Sunday afternoon in Lagos turned tragic when a 40-ft container truck lost control and crushed a commercial minibus, killing the driver on the spot and leaving three passengers seriously injured.
The accident occurred on Old Ipaja Road near Agbotikuyo on June 22, 2025, and has thrown the Ipaja–Iyana-Ipaja axis into chaos, with traffic stretching for hours along Shofunde and Olufunlayo.
🛑 This marks yet another fatal crash linked to brake failure — a recurring nightmare on Nigerian roads.
Truck’s Brake Failure Ends in Horror
According to eyewitnesses and reports from Vanguard, the truck, with registration number MUS 729 XY, suffered brake failure and rammed into a Korope minibus heading towards Iyana Ipaja.
The driver of the minibus died instantly, while two women and a man sustained severe injuries and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by emergency responders.
LASTMA (Lagos State Traffic Management Authority) officers at the scene quickly arrested the truck driver, who was reportedly trying to flee. He has since been handed over to officers at Elere and Area G Police Divisions.
Officials React to Deadly Crash
Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, confirmed the incident, calling it “devastating.”
“The truck lost control due to brake failure and toppled onto the minibus, killing the driver instantly,” he said.
“We’re urging all truck operators to properly maintain their braking systems before entering public roads.”
Giwa extended condolences to the bereaved family and praised the quick intervention of LASTMA personnel.
This Isn’t the First Time: A Pattern of Preventable Deaths
Sadly, this is not an isolated case. Just recently:
-
In Ogun State, 16-year-old Omobewaji Sanni, a WASSCE candidate and new mother, was killed by a runaway truck while returning from her exam centre.
-
In another incident, 25-year-old Moses Ekpolo, his 19-year-old wife Josephine, and a third person were crushed while riding a motorcycle, leaving their family in mourning.
The Bigger Question: How Many More Must Die?
With rising cases of brake failure and reckless driving, many Nigerians are calling on state and federal governments to implement stricter truck inspections, introduce vehicle health certifications, and enforce stiffer penalties for negligent operators.
