“Genevieve’s Silence Is Hurting Her Brand” – Comedian DeeOne Sparks Online Debate Over Nollywood Star’s Digital Relevance

By NewsVista Reporter | June 24, 2025

Nigerian comedian DeeOne has triggered widespread conversation on social media following his blunt remarks about veteran Nollywood actress Genevieve Nnaji, suggesting that her quiet digital presence is harming her relevance in today’s fast-paced entertainment industry.

Speaking on a recent episode of Pulse’s Hot Takes podcast, DeeOne argued that celebrities who fail to engage consistently on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and X risk being forgotten — regardless of their past achievements.

“Genevieve not talking much on social media is not helping her… Anybody who is not posting constantly is not top of mind,” DeeOne said, in a clip monitored by Newsvista.

He went further to compare her media silence to the online dominance of viral sensation Peller, a TikTok creator who has built a strong digital following through regular content. According to DeeOne, Peller is now more visible to younger Nigerians than Genevieve, despite her legendary status in Nollywood.

Online Reactions Divided

The comment has since sparked heated debate across various platforms. Some internet users agree that social media engagement is now an essential part of celebrity branding, arguing that even icons must evolve with the digital times.

However, others pushed back, defending Genevieve’s preference for privacy and intentional living. They argued that her work and legacy speak for themselves, and that not every public figure should be forced into a constant online presence to prove their worth.

“Not every celebrity has to post dance videos or skits to remain relevant,” one user on X wrote.

The Pressure of Digital Visibility

According to Newsvista’s entertainment analysts, the clash between legacy and visibility is a growing dilemma for many established stars in Africa’s film and music industries. While digital engagement offers newer talents rapid exposure, older entertainers often maintain a more reserved approach that sometimes clashes with modern trends.

Genevieve Nnaji, known for classics like Lionheart, Ije, and The Mirror Boy, has built a career grounded in talent, elegance, and quiet influence. However, in today’s algorithm-driven world, the question remains: can a star remain relevant without a strong online footprint?
