Lagos Govt Breaks Silence After Peter Obi’s Outburst Over Demolition of Brother’s Property
The Lagos State Government has officially denied any involvement in the reported demolition of a property said to belong to the younger brother of Labour Party leader and former presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, June 26, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described Obi’s claims as “baseless and disturbing.”
“The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) did not carry out the demolition,” Omotoso stated. “No government agency was involved in any such activity as alleged.”
Obi Raises Alarm Over Demolition
Obi, in a public post earlier this week, expressed shock over what he called a lawless act. He claimed that the property, owned by his brother’s company and standing for over 15 years, was demolished based on a court order that did not mention the property or authorize its destruction.
“How did we get here as a country?” Obi questioned. “This level of disregard for legal process is disturbing.”
The incident quickly sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and transparency.
Lagos Govt Says “No Hands in It”
In response, the Lagos government insisted it had no knowledge of the demolition and has launched a full investigation to determine who was behind it.
“We urge the public to treat Mr. Obi’s remarks with caution,” Omotoso said. “It’s unfortunate that such weighty claims were made without proper verification.”
He emphasized that the Special Adviser on eGIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, also confirmed that LASBCA had no involvement in the demolition.
Lagos Reaffirms Commitment to Law and Order
Omotoso assured Lagos residents that the state remains committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting residents’ rights, and investigating any acts of illegality tied to land and property.
“Any individual or group found guilty of breaching the law will be brought to justice,” he added.
Tension Grows Between Obi and Lagos Officials
This is not the first time Peter Obi and Lagos state officials have traded words. In a related development, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently accused Obi of lacking the moral grounds to criticize poverty in Nigeria, claiming poverty worsened under Obi’s leadership in Anambra, while Lagos under Tinubu made economic gains.
📌 Quick Take:
As the investigation unfolds, all eyes remain on the Lagos State Government for answers. Meanwhile, Peter Obi’s supporters are calling for transparency, and critics question the political undertones of the situation.
