It was like I was dreaming, seeing her body like that with those bruises and blood everywhere-mother
According to a NewsVista report, what was meant to be a hopeful first date ended in unimaginable tragedy for 30-year-old Olorato Mongale in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Olorato had taken every safety precaution before meeting a man named John for a date. She scheduled the meetup in daylight and even shared her live location with friends. At exactly 2:47 PM, she messaged them that she was on her way. But just one hour later, her phone went silent—and her location began bouncing around dangerous parts of the city.
Alarmed, a group of seven friends launched a desperate search, retracing her digital trail through increasingly unsafe areas. “Every place we went looked dodgier and dodgier. I was panicking,” said Karabo Mokoena, one of the friends involved.
Their worst fears came true. Olorato’s handbag was found discarded on a pile of bricks by the roadside. Moments later, police were alerted, and the search intensified.
Tragically, Olorato’s lifeless body was discovered near the entrance of a random house—less than 100 meters from where her friends had been searching all night. Her mother, devastated at the scene, said: “It was like I was dreaming, seeing her body like that—with bruises and blood everywhere.”
Her face was swollen beyond recognition, her eyes blackened, and her clothing torn. A post-mortem confirmed she died from blunt force trauma, with police believing she was brutally beaten to death.
The heartbreaking story has sparked fresh outrage over violence against women in South Africa, as the hunt for her killer continues.
