Wike: We Regretted Having Him As FCT Minister, We Thought He’d Improve Things – NCSU Chairman
According to a NewsVista report, frustration boiled over in Abuja as members of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) staged a protest, expressing bitter disappointment with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.
In a video shared by Voice TV Nigeria, NCSU chairman Comrade Emmanuel didn’t mince words: âWe regretted having him as FCT Minister. We thought he’d improve things.â Initially hopeful that Wike would bring long-overdue reforms, workers say the situation has only worsened since he assumed office.
The union cited several issues, including a complete halt in overhead costs for government offices, forcing directors to personally fund basic operations. Promotions have stalled for years, and the recent removal of hundreds of names from the payrollâallegedly to eliminate ghost workersâhas left many unpaid and confused.
Some auxiliary staff claim they havenât received salaries in six months, despite decades of service. Without official appointment letters, gratuity, or pension rights, they feel abandoned. âHow do you survive on âŚ35,000 in this economy?â one worker asked in frustration.
While the minister has been praised for pushing infrastructure projects across Abuja, workers insist that development should also include the welfare of civil servants keeping the city running. They warned that if urgent action isnât takenâespecially regarding salary arrears, promotions, and employment confirmationâlarger protests may erupt soon.
For now, the sense among many staff is clear: what was once seen as a promising appointment has turned into a period of deep disappointment and hardship.
