Jay Jay Ockocha Recounts Inspiring Brazil Legend Ronaldinho: “I Helped People During My Career”

According to a NewsVista reporter, Nigerian football icon Austin Jay Jay Okocha has opened up about his time playing alongside Brazilian legend Ronaldinho at Paris Saint-Germain — and shared how selflessness shaped his football journey.

Okocha, who joined PSG in 1998 as the most expensive African player at the time, was already dazzling crowds with his famous flair and skill. When a young Ronaldinho arrived from Brazil’s Gremio in 2001, fans immediately noticed chemistry between the two magicians in midfield. But behind the scenes, Okocha said he didn’t just share the pitch — he shared knowledge.

“Sometimes in life, you have to understand it’s not always about you,” the former Super Eagles captain said. “It gives me more joy to know that during my career, I helped people. I don’t talk about it, but it feels good to know some appreciated it.”

Though many credit Okocha for shaping Ronaldinho’s early European experience, he says he doesn’t need recognition — he’s more fulfilled knowing he helped others grow. “It’s better to see them succeed,” he added.

Now 51, the former Bolton star is still close to the football scene, often returning to PSG for legends’ events and UEFA games. He recently shared the pitch again — this time in a symbolic sense — with club heroes like Pauleta, Makélélé, and Marquinhos during PSG’s UCL campaign against Arsenal.

When asked about Nigeria’s current Super Eagles squad, Okocha playfully dodged picking favorites: “If I mention names, I’ll land in trouble. I can play with all of them!”

On giving back to the community, Okocha made it clear it’s a personal choice. “Not every footballer becomes successful, and we only see those who made it. Giving back should come from the heart, not pressure.”

True to his words, Okocha has quietly given back — including building over 100 homes for the homeless in Enugu, his birthplace.

From dazzling on the field to uplifting off it, Okocha’s legacy lives on — not just in goals or highlights, but in people.
