Breaking: US Revises Visa Reciprocity Policy for Nigeria, “Bad News”

According to NewsVista reports, the United States has officially reduced the validity period of most non-immigrant visas issued to Nigerians. Effective immediately, applicants will now receive single-entry visas valid for just three months, a major change from the previously longer durations.

This update was confirmed in a statement from the US Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. However, the embassy clarified that all visas issued before that date remain valid under their original terms.

The US government explained that the decision is part of its global visa reciprocity policy, which is reviewed regularly based on national security and immigration standards. Key factors include document security, information sharing, and how countries manage visa overstays.

In a statement, the US emphasized its commitment to working with the Nigerian government to meet these global benchmarks and maintain strong bilateral ties. The embassy also praised the ongoing efforts of the Nigeria Immigration Service and related agencies to align with international best practices.

Responding to the change, Nigerian journalist Eniola Akinkuotu noted that the US move is in line with reciprocity, suggesting it was triggered by Nigeria’s prior visa restrictions on US citizens.

Despite the tighter rules, the US reaffirmed its dedication to fostering educational, business, and cultural exchanges with Nigeria—urging applicants to follow visa guidelines and submit accurate documents.
