Peter Obi Finally Opens Up on Relationship With Abacha During Military Regime
According to NewsVista, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has finally addressed lingering claims about his past dealings with Nigeria’s late military ruler, General Sani Abacha. In a public statement released on his official social media page, Obi set the record straight by releasing an official document to support his explanation.
Obi, who governed Anambra State for two terms, said the meeting with General Abacha was never political and had nothing to do with personal or partisan interests. According to him, the engagement happened during a period of serious concern among traders and importers over persistent port congestion and shipping delays.
“I had never met General Abacha before that day. We were simply a group of businesspeople advocating for faster port clearance, and we met with the head of state as part of a national taskforce,” he stated.
He further released official documents he co-signed with fellow traders as part of the Taskforce on Port Decongestion, saying the clarification was necessary for the sake of public record and those seeking the truth.
This comes just days after news broke that Obi reportedly submitted a one-term presidency deal to Atiku Abubakar’s opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which includes heavyweights like Rotimi Amaechi.
Meanwhile, popular cleric Prophet Joshua Iginla has warned Obi against accepting a vice presidential slot in any coalition arrangement, insisting he must remain focused on the top ticket.
In a related update, NewsVista gathered that Bolaji Abdullahi, a former minister, has been named the interim spokesperson for the ADC. The coalition’s full leadership is expected to be formally unveiled in Abuja.
As the opposition rallies around the ADC platform ahead of 2027, political analysts believe the internal dynamics, ambition clashes, and public perception of credibility will shape the battle to unseat President Tinubu’s APC-led government.
