Okonjo-Iweala Clarifies Comments on Tinubu’s Economic Reforms Amid Public Backlash

Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has addressed the wave of criticism following her recent remarks about Nigeria’s economic situation under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement on her official X (formerly Twitter) page, the former Nigerian finance minister said her earlier comments were taken out of context. She explained that her observations were based on a recent visit to Abuja, during which she met with President Tinubu to discuss the country’s economy and ongoing reforms.

“Signs of Stabilization, But Hardship is Real”

According to Okonjo-Iweala, she told the president that the reforms appeared to be moving in the right direction and the economy was showing early signs of stability.

However, she stressed that this did not mean Nigerians were free from economic hardship.

“Stabilizing the economy is not enough. There must be stronger social safety nets to protect poor and vulnerable citizens,” she said.

She noted that reforms often come with short-term pain, and in Nigeria’s case, the suffering of ordinary people was clearly visible.
