RIP: Dad Killed After Using His Body to Shield His Little Girl During Boksburg Shooting Identified

According to reports from The Citizen, the Reiger Park community in Boksburg, Gauteng, has been thrown into mourning after 36-year-old Joseph Mokoena was shot dead while heroically shielding his young daughter during a deadly weekend shooting.

The tragedy occurred on Saturday evening when gunmen stormed the area near a local tavern and opened fire indiscriminately, killing six people and injuring three others. Witnesses said Joseph’s quick instinct saved his child’s life — but cost him his own.

“He covered his daughter with his body as the shots rang out,” one distraught resident recounted. “When the gunfire stopped, the little girl was crying beside him — untouched, but her father was gone.”

Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed the incident, revealing that the attackers fled in two vehicles and that a case of multiple murders and attempted murders has been opened. Authorities say investigations are underway and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Family members described Joseph as a humble, hardworking father who loved his family deeply. His wife, Nomsa Mokoena, said through tears, “He died a hero. He gave his life to save our daughter. We’ve lost everything, but his bravery will never be forgotten.”

The Reiger Park community has since demanded tougher action against violent crime, describing the area as increasingly unsafe. Residents say random shootings have become frequent, leaving families in constant fear.

Counseling services have been arranged for Joseph’s traumatized daughter and other affected families, while police continue their hunt for the gunmen. Read Original
