Former Police Officer’s Brother Who Allegedly Killed People to Cash Out R10 Million Appears in Court

Polokwane – A 53-year-old man, Leshweng Johannes Shokane, appeared in the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court following his arrest in connection with a series of alleged insurance-linked murders spanning nearly a decade. His involvement adds another dimension to a case that already implicates multiple members of the Shokane family.

Johannes is the brother of former police officer Rachel Raesetsa Shokane Kutumela (43), Annah Shokane (47), and uncle to Madjadji Flora Shokane (23). Investigators allege that the women fraudulently opened life and funeral insurance policies in victims’ names and later had the victims killed, cashing out approximately R10 million from insurers including ABSA, Capitec, Standard Bank, Hollard, Assupol, Old Mutual, One Life, and Clientele.

During his court appearance, Johannes faced charges including nine counts of murder, money laundering, receiving proceeds of unlawful activity, and defeating the ends of justice. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing scheduled for 18 November 2025. Prosecutors are seeking to formally join him to the main case already before the Polokwane High Court, where the other accused are set to stand trial from 5 to 30 October 2026.

Authorities maintain that the alleged proceeds from the crimes were distributed among the accused family members, highlighting the scale and sophistication of the alleged scheme. The case continues to attract significant public attention due to its complexity and the involvement of a former law enforcement officer.
