Man who slept with his ex-girlfriend after beating her with a hammer has been sentenced
Limpopo – Aifheli Tshinavha, 41, from Ha-Magau in Limpopo, has been handed a severe prison sentence following a violent attack on his former girlfriend. The incident, which took place on May 7, 2023, involved Tshinavha assaulting the woman with a mallet and sexually assaulting her, leaving her with serious physical and emotional trauma.
Court records reveal that the victim was returning home from a stokvel meeting when Tshinavha confronted her, forced her to his home, and attacked her. Evidence presented during the trial included the victim’s testimony, a statement from her mother, and medical records confirming the injuries sustained. Despite denying the charges, the court found the evidence overwhelming.
State Prosecutor Tshilidzi Rose Mugeri highlighted the profound psychological impact on the victim, noting Tshinavha’s lack of remorse. Presiding officer Hailie Kellerman emphasized the broader societal implications, stating that such acts undermine the ongoing fight against gender-based violence in South Africa.
Tshinavha was sentenced to life imprisonment for assault, 10 years for kidnapping, and 15 years for sexual assault, reflecting the severity of his crimes. Authorities reiterated the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals and ensuring justice for victims of gender-based violence.
