RIP|| Grade 10 Learner Who Committed Suicide & Drop A Note Have Been Identified
Sharpeville, November 7, 2025 – The Sharpeville Phase 2 community is in mourning after 16-year-old Lerato, a Grade 10 student at El Shaddai Secondary School, tragically died by suicide following months of alleged relentless bullying. The heartbreaking incident occurred on Thursday, November 6, leaving family, friends, and educators grappling with grief and urgent questions about school safety.
According to relatives, Lerato endured persistent harassment from peers, including verbal abuse and social isolation, despite repeated pleas for intervention. The teen had previously attempted suicide in September after ingesting medication, spending weeks in Sebokeng Hospital before returning to school. “We begged the school to act, but instead of support, they shielded the bullies,” said Lerato’s aunt, Nomvula Mthembu.
Investigations reveal that the school administration may have dismissed bullying reports as “childish squabbles,” prioritizing aggressors’ academic records over Lerato’s well-being. The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed it is conducting a probe into the matter, emphasizing that learner welfare remains a priority.
Experts warn that unaddressed bullying can have devastating psychological effects. Child psychologist Dr. Thabo Nkosi noted, “Teens like Lerato internalize this as personal failure. Schools must implement zero-tolerance policies, not excuses.” Community members held vigils in Sharpeville, demanding justice and stronger protections for students.
As the family prepares for Lerato’s funeral next week, anti-bullying activists are calling for nationwide reforms, including mandatory mental health support and clear reporting guidelines for schools. Additional coverage, photos, and analysis on this tragedy are available on SouthReport.
