Suspect Linked to Multiple Political Killings Shot Dead in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal authorities have confirmed the death of Sphelele Zubane, a man believed to be involved in multiple politically motivated murders in the province. Zubane was shot during a police operation while allegedly planning an armed robbery, bringing an end to a violent chapter that has long unsettled local communities.

Police reports indicate that Zubane had been under surveillance by the Crime Intelligence Unit for several weeks. Investigators linked him to at least two high-profile political assassinations, including the killing of Zakhele Khuzwayo, an ANC councillor from Maphumulo, who was shot in September 2022. The Political Killings Task Team has been investigating these cases, highlighting ongoing concerns about politically motivated violence in the region.

Zubane’s death occurred during a tactical raid aimed at intercepting his planned heist. According to law enforcement sources, a confrontation ensued when officers attempted to apprehend him, resulting in a shootout. Firearms and ammunition were recovered, and authorities are examining whether these weapons were used in prior political murders.

In recent years, KwaZulu-Natal has faced a series of politically driven killings tied to intra-party disputes, tender conflicts, and local power struggles. While arrests and convictions, such as that of Zubane’s associate Phathesakhe Ngiba in July 2025, have disrupted some criminal networks, political violence remains a persistent challenge. Authorities are continuing to analyze Zubane’s communications and financial records to uncover further links to unresolved cases.
