Protesters Block Onitsha Head Bridge Over Soludo’s Market Closure [Video]

Residents on Wednesday blocked the Onitsha Head Bridge in Anambra State in protest against the shutdown of the Onitsha Main Market by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

A video shared online showed protesters blocking access points to the bridge while chanting slogans such as, “No way in, no way out. Onitsha to Asaba blocked. Stand till!”

As the protest grew, some demonstrators remained on the bridge while others fled the area.

The action followed Governor Soludo’s decision on Monday to shut the Onitsha Main Market for one week.

Traders affected by the closure had earlier staged a protest on Tuesday, marching through the streets with placards and singing protest songs.

Some of the traders were also heard chanting messages in support of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Popular chants captured in videos included “Soludo, we no go gree o” and “Say no to Monday.”

The Onitsha Head Bridge serves as a key link between Anambra and Delta states, and the protest reportedly caused major disruption to traffic moving in and out of Anambra.

The sit-at-home in the South-East began in 2021 following a directive by the IPOB to protest the arrest and detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
