Gordon goal sinks Chelsea as Newcastle pick first Stamford Bridge win in over 13 years

Newcastle United dealt a setback to Chelsea hopes of securing UEFA Champions League qualification with a narrow 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

Anthony Gordon scored the decisive goal in the first half to hand Newcastle a rare away win against the London side.

The defeat left Chelsea supporters frustrated as the team were booed off at full-time after losing at home to the Magpies for the first time since 2012.

Gordon strikes after early Chelsea pressure

Chelsea started the match brightly and created several early opportunities.

Wesley Fofana missed a free header, while chances also fell to Alejandro Garnacho, Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez.

However, Newcastle took the lead in the 18th minute when Joe Willock broke Chelsea’s offside trap after receiving a pass from Tino Livramento.

Willock squared the ball into the box where Gordon slid in to finish from close range in front of England manager Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea appealed for a penalty shortly afterwards when Reece James appeared to pull down Malick Thiaw, but the video assistant referee ruled that no foul had occurred.

Chelsea push but Newcastle hold firm

Chelsea made a tactical change at half-time, with manager Liam Rosenior introducing striker Liam Delap for Malo Gusto.

Delap quickly tested Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale with a long-range effort as the hosts searched for an equaliser.

Later chances also fell to Garnacho, Trevoh Chalobah and Delap, but Newcastle’s defence held firm.

Chelsea also appealed for another penalty when Nick Woltemade made contact with Palmer inside the area, though referee Paul Tierney waved play on.

The closest the hosts came to scoring arrived in stoppage time when captain James struck a free-kick against the post before Joao Pedro headed over the crossbar.

The result lifts Newcastle to ninth in the Premier League table, while Chelsea remain fifth, having played one game more than Liverpool.
